London-based app developm…

London-based app development startup Mindshapes, which is behind a series of educational games and applications, has secured $4 million in funding from VC firm Index Ventures, Richmond Park Partners and existing investors. The company was co-founded in 2010 by chairman Shukri Shammas and CTO Sami Lababidi (also founders of Playfish and Macrospace), CEO David Begg (co-founder of Active Hotels and Tom Dixon), CCO Christian Dorffer and CFO Tareq Naqib. Billed as an interactive learning company by its founders, Mindshapes builds multi-platform, educational games for both children and adults. Thus far, the startup has produced nine educational apps for iOS devices. The company is touting the release of Magic Town, which it says is the first virtual world based on picture book characters such as Winnie the Witch, Elmer and Little Princess. The website is already live, and accompanying apps for iPad and iPhone will be released this summer, Mindshapes says. By the end of the year, the company asserts that there will be a total of 200 stories. Another flagship product is Language City, an interactive language learning game for the ‘social networking generation’ (more specifically, the startup is targeting 16-30 year olds from around the world). The game will launch soon. Founded in 2010, Mindshapes has offices in London, New York and San Francisco.

Wordnom Multiplayer Online Word Game Now In Windows Phone Marketplace!

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WmPowerUser/~3/Y-WTDV91gG4/

“If you are a fan of multiplayer online word games, this one is for you. Wordnom is one such game with support for web-based gameplay. So all the participants in the game are not required to own a Windows Phone device. Check out the full description below.

Game Description:

Wordnom is a multiplayer, online word game based on the classic board game that people of all ages have come to know and love. Invite your Facebook friends or let us match you with an opponent. A web-based version means no Windows Phone is required for your friends to play. You can also play on the go from your Windows Phone, and then pick-up where you left off from your PC at home. The TrueSkill ranking system tracks your skill level relative to other players. The word challenge feature adds a dimension of fun and skill by leaving it to your opponent to determine if your word is good or bad, but your challenger is penalized if your word is good. The board leveling feature encourages players to use all of the board by adding new bonus tiles in lightly used areas if they start to develop. If you prefer, you can choose to play with word challenge and board leveling disabled. An interactive history lets you review all of the moves for the game, including voting on words as good or bad for challenge entries to help us improve if we get it wrong. Push and background notifications improve your gaming experience but are not required for play. Live tile support lets you see at a glance how many moves are waiting on you, and the dashboard feature lets you see your most recent activity at a glance.

The game costs $2.99 with free trial available. You can find it here from the marketplace.

Motion-controlled gaming…

Motion-controlled gaming’s just been taken to the next level. This is leap, a new motion sensor peripheral that works through gestures. While you may draw comparisons to the Kinect, the Kinect has nothing on Leap’s accuracy. The Kinect is able to detect full-body motion, but isn’t accurate enough to detect hand gestures. Leap, on the other hand, is able to detect gestures accurate down to 1/100ths of a millimeter within a four-foot area. Such sensitivity is required to read users’ most subtle finger gestures to allow daily computing without frustration. Imagine the host of possibilities that can be unlocked with Leap Motion’s technology. Besides having the ability to replace the mouse, the Leap Motion can be yet another step into motion-control gaming. Maybe we can finally experience a twitch shooter by making a “pulling the trigger” gesture… or, if you’re less ambitious, play Fruit Ninja without the glitches experienced with the Kinect version. The folks behind Leap Motion are currently seeking out developers who will develop apps specifically for the peripheral. Developer Kits are available for free to those looking to request one. All you have to do, according to Leap’s website, is wow the Leap devs. At the consumer level, the Leap is expected to be launching next year for $70. Pre-orders are available after filling out a form on the Leap website.

Microsoft posts Windows 8 app porting guide roundup, forgets to include BASIC!

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/27/microsoft-posts-windows-8-app-porting-guide-roundup/

“Let’s say you’re a developer eager to convert your apps for Windows 8 as soon as possible. Where do you start? Microsoft Developer Evangelist Jennifer Marsman is very much aware that you might be at a loss, so she has done the rather large favor of rounding up every porting guide the company has to offer in one handy place. Some of these are pure design guides, like a previously spotted iPad-to-Metro layout article, but others dig deep into converting code for the land of home tiles and charms. The focus is on porting from the web and Windows Phone 7, so we wouldn’t work up hopes of bringing your high school computer class project to Metro. Still, Marsman is looking for more guides from readers; if you’ve developed just the technique to convert 10 PRINT “HELLO WORLD” 20 GOTO 10 into a tablet-native Windows 8 app, return the generosity and leave pointers at the source link.
