NUIverse app for Microsoft Surface 2.0 is a multitouch, universe simulating wonder!

“If you’ve ever played around with Google Earth you know how difficult it can be to explore just our planet — forget about the entire universe. Microsoft Surface 2.0 app NUIverse makes it all look incredibly easy however, with Natural User Interface (NUI, get it?) support for zooming, panning, and more with all your fingers. Microsoft Technology Center developer David Brown shows off the app running on the new Samsung SUR40 running Surface 2.0 in the video below, and while it is lengthy, it’s also one of the most impressive tech demos we’ve seen.

According to Brown, the software can render up to 100,000 stars in real time, but that doesn’t even begin to explain it. The whole experience (at least as it’s shown off in the video) is super…

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines $WCAG$ 2.0

http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0  defines how to make Web content more accessible to people with disabilities. Accessibility involves a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. Although these guidelines cover a wide range of issues, they are not able to address the needs of people with all types, degrees, and combinations of disability. These guidelines also make Web content more usable by older individuals with changing abilities due to aging and often improve usability for users in general.

WCAG 2.0 is developed through the W3C process in cooperation with individuals and organizations around the world, with a goal of providing a shared standard for Web content accessibility that meets the needs of individuals, organizations, and governments internationally. WCAG 2.0 builds on WCAG 1.0 [WCAG10] and is designed to apply broadly to different Web technologies now and in the future, and to be testable with a combination of automated testing and human evaluation. For an introduction to WCAG, see the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Overview.

Web accessibility depends not only on accessible content but also on accessible Web browsers and other user agents. Authoring tools also have an important role in Web accessibility. For an overview of how these components of Web development and interaction work together, see:

Easy visualization of scientific data: drag, drop, filter, slide, view, zoom, share

DataSet Viewer is a simple standalone menu-driven tool for quickly exploring and comparing time series, geographic distributions and other patterns within scientific data. DataSet Viewer combines selection, filtering and slicing tools, with various chart types (scatter plots, line graphs, heat maps, as well as tables), and geographic mapping (using Bing Maps). The resulting views can be exported as images or movies, or bundled into an interactive package that be shared with colleagues.
